How Hard Is Dorset and Somerset's Water?

In short: Dorset and Somerset's water is quite hard, with some regions like Sherborne exceeding 300ppm!

How is Hardness Measured in Water?

Water hardness is measured in parts per million (ppm). It describes the quantity of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) present in a million parts of water.

Hardness is measured on a scale as follows:

0-50 ppm - Soft

51-100 ppm - Moderately Soft

101-150 ppm - Slightly Hard

151-200 ppm - Moderately Hard

201-300 ppm - Hard

Over 300 ppm - Very Hard

See the map of the UK on the right, and notice that Dorset and surrounding regions are in pink, meaning hard or very hard water supply!

Testing the hardness of your water is quick and easy, learn how here.

A map showing the regions of hardness in the UK, Dorset and Somerset are lit in pink, indicating that the water there is hard.

And the trend continues like this for all of Dorset and Somerset! Many places exceed 250ppm. If you are in one of these areas or immediately surrounding, we strongly recommend getting your water tested (which you can do here), and installing a water softening system in your home. Hard water causes chalky limescale build up and can irritate the skin and hair!

These values are an average, and often hardness can vary seasonally and/or when the water supply is changed. In recent memory we've tested Ilminster water as high as 400ppm!
